What each kind of ear wax cleaner actually does

"Ear wax cleaner" covers a lot of very different things, and the differences are the whole story. Here is the honest version of each.

An irrigation kit

The ear washer kit is an adult home-irrigation product supplied with instructions. Ask a pharmacist whether wax-softening treatment or irrigation is suitable for you. Do not use it with pain, discharge, bleeding, fever, sudden hearing change, dizziness, grommets, a known or possible perforation, infection, recent ear surgery or contrary clinical advice.

A camera ear pick

The video otoscope cleaner has a 4.5mm camera and six LEDs and streams a view to a compatible phone. It is for cautious viewing of the outer ear only, not diagnosis, and it must not be inserted deeply or used to force impacted material.

An ear candle

The NHS advises against using fingers or objects such as cotton buds to remove earwax because this can push wax further in.
